Newton's Almirante wins SCIL title Newton's Jywel Almirante held on to defeat Sparta's Lauren Lyons 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 in the championship match of the No. 1 singles bracket at the 2007 Sussex County Interscholastic League Girls Tennis Tournament contested on Saturday in Sparta. Sparta claimed the team title with 14 points while Newton was runnerup with nine. Both teams had all three of their singles players advance to the title round. Sparta's Kate Dowd defeated Newton's Erin Henegan 6-1, 6-3 in the second singles competition while another Sparta netster, Tricia Ashmore, won the No. 3 singles tourney with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Megan Muccilli of Newton. Sparta swept the doubles titles with Sarah Foster and Sarah Hetzler winning 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles slot while the tandem of Lexie Handel and Amanda Permutter won 6-3, 6-2 at second singles. 2007 Sussex County Interscholastic League Girls Tennis Tournament Team Scores: 1.
